The following symbols occur in a variety of contexts throughout records of speakers of ancient Germanic languages:

 

2. ICELANDIC OCCULT SYMBOLS

A variety of symbols extend from medieval Icelandic folk practice. As with many folk customs, whether these symbols derive from earlier tradition or were a later development remains unknown. Nonetheless, they do form an element of continuity in that some explicitly invoke North Germanic deities. Commonly encountered symbols include the following:

  • Ægishjálmur

  • Vegvisir
