Merry Yuletide from Mimisbrunnr.info!: Some Yuletide Goodies and a 2023 Preview
Merry Yuletide from the Mimisbrunnr.info crew! We’ve had a busy last year, during which time we’ve worked on a wide variety of projects. On the horizon:
The Comparative Hávamál: Continuing from Eddic to English and Edda to English, as well as The Comparative Völuspá, this resource will compare six public domain translations of the famous Old Norse poem Hávamál.
The Comparative Sigrdrífumál: In the same fashion as above, we intend to produce a comparative resource for study of this highly influential poem.
Both of these poems also hold unique interest for runologists, scholars who study the history and use of the runic scripts.
In addition to this, we’ve been building the groundwork for a network of Mimisbrunnr.info-aligned Reddit forums, allowing for better sharing of peer-reviewed and home-brewed resources to better assist scholars and enthusiasts in studying the rich ancient Germanic corpus.
We frequently receive questions regarding where to find prints from Mimisbrunnr.info artists Rim Baudey. You can purchase prints from Baudey, including some of the art she has created for the project, here.
Joseph S. Hopkins—Mimisbrunnr.info project lead—has appeared in or been the focus of a few podcasts recently and started a company called Hyldyr, which is adjacent to Hyldyr. Check out the Hyldyr Wellspring for some interesting material aligned with Mimisbrunnr.info’s focus, and a few podcasts:
The Nordic Mythology Podcast: “Everything is Wood” featuring Hopkins (December 2022)
Norse Mythology: The Unofficial Guide: “The Goddesses Time Forgot”, discussing a variety of papers published by Hopkins (October 2022)
Additionally, Hopkins discusses a variety of topics, including the potential of a proto-Edda in a paper published in December 2021, which he has uploaded online:
“Phantoms of the Edda: Observations Regarding Eddic Items of Unknown Provenance in the Prose Edda”, Folklore and Old Norse Mythology (December 2021)
Enjoy—and here’s to a productive 2023!
